Steel vs. Style: Why the NexTool SO is Challenging the Leatherman Micra

This article supplements the Earthling EDC Youtube review of the Nextool S0 mini multitool

For decades, the Leatherman Micra has been the undisputed king of the keychain. But a new contender, the NexTool SO (Mini Sailor Scissors), is proving that premium finishes and modern metallurgy don't have to cost $50.

The Material Science

While the Micra relies on a differential heat treatment of 420HC steel, NexTool has taken a "Modular Steel" approach. By using 5Cr15MoV (54-56 HRC) for the scissors and drivers, they ensure high toughness and easy sharpening. They pair this with 420J1 handles that have undergone a Plasma Polishing process—a treatment usually reserved for high-end electronics—resulting in a surface that is more fingerprint-resistant and durable than the Micra’s standard brushed finish.

Power in a Small Package

Despite weighing only 34g (1.2 oz), the SO features the patented NEX-SCISSORS. These are roll-polished to minimize friction, allowing the shear-grind blades to glide through materials that would make the Micra’s chisel-ground blades flex or slip.

The Comparison table

Feature NexTool SO Leatherman Micra
Weight 34g (Ultralight) 51g
Scissor Steel 5Cr15MoV (Tough) 420HC (Hard)
Handle Finish Plasma Polished Brushed Stainless
Bladeless? Yes (Travel Friendly) No (1.6" Blade)
Price ~$18.00 ~$49.95

Final Thought

If you value American heritage and a 25-year warranty, the Micra remains a classic. However, if you want a travel-friendly, modern tool that uses superior manufacturing finishes like plasma and roll polishing for a third of the price, the NexTool SO is the new EDC benchmark.
